Light

Light

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus encourages his followers to “let your light shine before men”.

In thinking about this I identified four types of light. There is the standard light bulb, the torch, the camera flash bulb, and the candle.

Which do you think is the best light?

My conclusion was that the electric light bulb is the best.

Why?

Because the other three are powered from within themselves, and so eventually have to fail.

The candle is easily snuffed out by any breath of wind. The torch may give a good beam, but sooner or later its battery will go flat. The camera flash bulb is very bright and attention grabbing, but it too will cease when the battery goes flat.

The electric bulb, however, is different. Its power source is outside of itself, and we know that electricity is pretty much an endless source of power. And so this bulb will shine for years no matter what the weather or external conditions may be.

I observe many Christians fitting one of these four lights.

There are the candle flickery weak ones who are easily tempted away from their Christianity. There are the steady torch-like ones, but they don’t last and when their faith is tested, they go flat. There are some flashy ones who are so spiritual while at Church services, but seem to be quite willing to walk in darkness during the week. And, of course, there are those who stand out through thick and thin, no matter what the world throws at them.

And this is what people want to see in the Christian, isn’t it?

Steadiness, dependability, reliability, integrity, and so on. The electric light may not be bright, but it will last, and so should the Christian.

Why should a Christian be expected to last?

Because the Christian’s power source comes from without - plugged in to God himself.

So....

Which light best describes you?
