When it is pointed out that God is a God of love, athiests delight in using old testament where God has used pestilence and killing to chastise the jews. How do you answer this.
For instance, God brought down diseases on the egyptions and killed people in other situations.

Hi there!
I don't try to defend God in these matters. Because it is true, there are a number of times revealed in the Bible when God put people to death, and not just the Jews.
Our problem is that we create a God in our minds that we want. And because no one enjoys discipline, pain, hardship etc, we cut these traits out of our image of God, and then we are surprised when he proves to be different to what we want.
Its kind of like gravity. We appreciate it when a ball comes back to ground, or that we don't float away every time we jump in the air. But we don't like it when we want to fly off like a bird and instead crash to the ground.
God IS love, but he is also just, righteous, merciful, and so on.
For those (you mention atheists but there are many others) who delight in rubbishing God, remember that their mockery will only last until they drop dead, and then they will have the biggest "oooops" moment in their eternity. They will then discover that they are not quite the big deal that they thought, and that the God they scorned is a really BIG deal!
Only stupid people judge the whole book after reading just a couple of chapters. Wise people read the whole story.
