Hi Terry, can you tell me the meaning of to loose and bind as in to bind in heaven as you bind on earth.
Hi.
These words are found in two passages, Matthew 16:19, and 18:18.
The 1st reference is spoken by Jesus to Peter; the second is to do with the discipline of a Christian who is out of line and refuses to change.
My understanding is that binding and loosing were common Jewish words that simply meant forbidding and allowing.
If this is true, then Jesus gave great authority to Peter by telling him that whatever he allowed or forbade on earth would receive his (Jesus) backing from Heaven. Jesus then gave the same promise to the Church when discipline had to be implemented, this time subject to the safety criteria of needing two or more witnesses.
Unfortunately, much Church discipline doesn't follow the clear procedures laid down in Matthew 18, resulting in long lasting damage to everyone involved. The Catholic Church is currently in the middle of an immorality mess, and not handling it very well.
I use the binding (forbidding) process from time to time when dealing with demonic spirits, and have found it very effective, although it is never a permanent solution. My ultimate aim is to always get rid of demonic presence permanently, but sometimes there has to be an in-between stage where demonic activity needs to be shut down while more information is gathered, or whatever.
Trust this helps.
Lord bless.
